Skins: Frankie

This season of Skins has been all about fashion in a way that past seasons weren’t. The first few episodes have all been about personal style, and transformation through clothing. The first episode stars Frankie, a trouble girl who is just starting at a new school. Throughout the entire episode, she is constantly getting dressed and undressed, looking in the mirror, and the dialog is constantly about clothes.

Frankie has a sort of rockabilly/teddy boy style with white creepers and big masculine shirts and jackets.  In other words, awesome.

Of course the “mean girls” at school can’t accept her butch look, and attempt to make her over.  Continue reading

“Repo! The Genetic Opera” Costumes

I am the second eldest of six children in my family. Although my siblings all get along surprisingly well, there are certain things we can NEVER agree on. One of these things is where to eat out; Each kid has a different favorite cuisine ranging from classic American diner food to Japanese. Similarly, we each have a favorite movie genre and are equally unwilling to stray from them. Over the Holiday I think we spent more time arguing over what movie to watch than actually watching them.

Fortunately there are some films that cover more than one genre. My little sister loves musicals and I love horror, and Paris Hilton as a surgery-addicted heir to the throne of a tyrannical biotech corporation + rock songs + crazy fashion turned out to be a winning combination. I’m not sure why I missed Repo! The Genetic Opera (Bousman, 2008) when it came out three years ago but in any case it’s worth watching if only for the campy goth costumes. No evil tyrant is complete without his pair of bodacious armed bodyguards to do his dirty work for him. I like the slutty futuristic take on the gangster suit. (Do I spy Limecrime’s “No She Didn’t” on the lips?).The main character, Shilo, might not have had the most epic songs but she had the best Victorian-inspired gothic lolita nightgowns and dresses. Fall Essentials

Today was a beautiful foggy day in London, check out my view! I’ve always really loved the fog, and I’ve been spoiled in terms of gray weather; London, Paris, Monterey, San Francisco…all gray, foggy cities.

Anyway, now that I am in a thoroughly Autumnal mood, I thought I’d post my fall essentials list.

  • Leopard print crop jacket from Topshop. As far as I’m concerned, leopard print is ALWAYS an essential. I’ve been wearing this jacket way too often.
  • Comme des Garcon‘s “Wonderwood“. I already rambled on about it here and here but I think its the perfect fall fragrance…very warm and not flowery at all.
  • Nars matte red lipstick…I’m really liking red lips right now, even though I didn’t used to be a lipstick person. Now I wear it almost every day.
  • Doc Marten Divas. I don’t actually own these, but I love them and I think they would fit in nicely with my fall wardrobe (HA! Excuses).
  • Bandanas/Head scarves. My hair is in that awkward growing out period. Actually its been in that awkward stage for over a year now but the best way to keep me from hacking it all off in frustration is to cover it with a scarf.
  • Peter-Pan collars. I’m not sure why but I love these little collars on everything lately…this one is Topshop but its funner to find vintage dresses with this feature.

Birthday List

Yep, its that time of year again! It’s the month where my fellow July-born Leos and I get to be vain and self-indulgent. So here it is, my wishlist for the big 2-0. I wouldn’t actually ask my family or friends for most of this because some of it is embarassingly expensive, but that’s what my blog is for, drooling, right?

Clockwise from top left;

1) The Jeffrey Campbell Atacoma” wedge rip-offs. I’ve been dying over the original Acne ones since they first hit the blogosphere ages ago, and since then there have been several knock-off versions. These are my favorite. Available at Nasty Gal.

2) It wouldn’t be my birthday if I wasn’t lusting over some camera or other, and this year its the Polaroid 300. I love the new chubby take on the classic Polaroid Instant, and this is the perfect camera for pretending to work in fashion. Available here in three colours.

3) This Fummel + Kram embroidered russian doll scarf is sooo gorgeous. I blogged about it here, and I won’t even link to wear you can buy it because the price is embarrassing.

4) I’m not usually a fan of sequins but the fact that its a motorcycle jacket silhouette makes this amazing. I like it because it can be casual but you could also wear it out when you are trying to be fancy (something I have discovered I’m not very good at). Available at Nasty Gal.

5) The Urban Decay Naked palette is like, all my favorite eyeshadow shades in one beautiful case. Obsessed. Available at Urban Decay.

6) I know you are all sick of hearing about the Jeremy Scott TV glasses, as I’ve posted them on four seperate occasions now. But true obsession means persistance, and I am still lusting over these. By some miracle they are not soldout at Opening Ceremony (hint hint sugar daddies).

7) I looove Bernhard Willhelm and this is such a rad colour for a nail polish (not to mention awesome packaging). Available at Doshaburi.

What’s at the top of your wish list right now?

Tied Eye

This weeks top five, in photo blog form.

Chanel Particulière and tie-dye. I’ve been rocking a lot of tie-dye lately as a tribute to my hometown…I’ve been missing the San Francisco Bay. Also, I totally have grandpa hands.

This is an “Emma’s eye view” of my creeper shoes which I will continue to wear despite my fellow fashion blogger Elle’s protests and threats to burn them if I don’t start wearing something else.

Also sporting my new purse from Zara’s fancier collection. I’ve been looking for a new bag for ages, and I was pleased to find that it was real leather.

Here of course is the little camera necklace I’ve been obsessing over.

Camden reminds me of Haight Ashbury, so of course I feel at home there, despite the overabundance of confused tourists.

Last but not least, my new Alexander McQueen scarf that I got as a graduation present :) I think its been making me lose weight as I wear it all the time and refuse to take it off or eat in it, lest I get croissant crumbs on it. Bonus?

I can just hear Tyra Banks yelling “There’s no life in your eyes! Smile with your eyes honey!” about this photo but she can suck it because I’m not a model. The scarf can speak for itself.

:)

Heavy Petal

This photo pretty much sums up my take on spring fashion: black leather with a touch of ironic girlyness.

Now if only I could remember where the heck I found this…

Musings/Top Five Catchup

Gosh, I have been a terrible lately…I was just organizing my blog categories today and I realized that I have completely neglected my “…of the week” posts since moving to London! I don’t think I’ve done a top five since the Christmas holidays…oops. Whelp, better late than never, as they say. Anyway here we go, this week’s Top Five is just some random things that are inspiring me lately, since the list is too long to really narrow it down to five. Black and blue, watches as headbands, sixties hair, finger jewelry, and I’ve developed an unholy obsession with black nail polish…I want to collect them all.

Bill Nye

If only Bill Nye the Science Guy needed a stylist…I’d have found my dream job. This is the first investment piece I would propose to him, the Risto Galaxy Parka.

The Divine Aoki

I love Devon Aoki…she has such a striking, different look. I think she and Milla Jovovich were my first favorite models before I really started getting into fashion, mostly because I’d seen them in movies. In Devon’s case it can mostly be atributed to the fact that I loved Sin City and 2 Fast 2 Furious (only because Ludacris was in it! I swear).

Style Icon: Cry Baby Girl

When I was younger, I thought Wanda from Cry Baby was the epitome of cool. The movie came out the year I was born, which might have something to do with my obsession with John Waters, leather jackets and baby doll bangs. I idolized Wanda’s mountains of blonde hair and retro winged liner. Oh to be a babe in Johnny Depp’s posse…Oh and she wore “hysterectomy pants” and played the triangle in their band. I KNOW, right? What a badass.

Poésy

“I am interested in costume. Clothes in your daily life are important: your choices say something about you, even if what they’re saying is about non-choice. And what you wear in a film is crucial. A film is a great deal about what you see, and the silhouette of a character tells you a lot.” -Clémence Poésy

#199

I deleted that last post for now because it was post #199 and I promised something special for post #200. It’s not ready yet and I felt like posting my “top five of the week”, which is kind of a Christmas with list this week, haha. In other words, I really don’t feel like studying right now, I’d much rather be shopping.
ANYWAY…here’s my list for Santy.

1) King Messenger by Deux Lux…only the most perfect bag ever. In my favorite color. With chubby studs. Avalaible online.

2) Nars cream eyeshadow in “Grananda”. The creme de la creme of eyeshadows as far as I’m concerned…Nars is my favorite.

3) Biker jacket from AYP. I have been looking for a more girly fitted biker jacket for a while and this one is classic.

4) PixieMarket “cop and eyeful skirt” by Evil Twin. Drool-worthy.

5) Tiger mesh jodphurs from Moxsie. Drop crotch+mesh+zippers!!!!!

Grandma’s Leftovers

I love Alice Glass. She has awesome style but she doesn’t give a fuck. She describes her style as “more grandmother’s leftovers than heroin chic”.

Band tees, colored tights, pencil skirts, cardigans, chuck taylors, leather jackets and ten pounds of black eyeliner.

Last Words

“Fashion film is something that has come out of my passion for video and film making, as well as my love of fashion imagery. For me, it is broader than just something being directly linked to the fashion industry.
It is the use of fashion imagery, clothing, models, lifestyle, that can take on a cinematic form, whether it be narrative, experimental, music video, video art, or feature film”
