Hey all,
I’m flying to Boston to see my sister in a few hours. Just wanted to wish you all happy holidays and safe travels :) Things will be slow on the blog for a bit while I’m in the States, but I will leave you with this epic spread from Dazed & Confused.

I’m having a major hairdentity crisis right now…its too short to do anything with other than my current Louise Brooks bob and I’m totally incapable of growing it out. Curses! Current inspirations;

I am officially moved in to my place in Paris and back to my regular blogging schedule! When I moved out of London, we took the train to Calais, a French town known for its long history of producing luxury lace. There we visited the Lace and Fashion museum which is in an authentic lace factory.
The museum showed examples of hand made lace, some of which were over a hundred years old, and the incredible craftsmanship involved in lace making. (All photos by Drooling Isn’t Photogenic.)

I’m really excited about the next issue of Dazed & Confused. Not only does it feature SWINTON, (as the Fug Girls refer to Tilda Swinton), it also feature this amazing editorial inspired by hippies and squatters. Shot by Ben Toms, the feature takes place in a “mystical English country garden” and looks new and unpretensious in black and white.

Presenting “Dark Collection” by Supermachines video look book for day four of Drooling Isn’t Fashion Week! Unlike yesterday’s Gemma Slack video, this one gives a really clear idea of the collection’s key pieces. The concept is really simple but there are some really clever bits in there; Using an art gallery as a catwalk and giving the model a camera is a sneaky way of presenting the models and clothing the way one would expect them to me, but in an unconventional way. Directed by Guillaume Miquel & Benoit Parrot.

I read Harper’s Bazaar on the plane to London and it gets massive props for two particularly awesome spreads this month (although I found the Kate Moss cover story rather boring), entitled “The Mode of Almodovar” and “Designer Double Take”.
“The Mode of Almodovar” spread “recasts the beloved Spanish director’s most memorable cinematic scenes with some of fashions most famous faces”. I was of course thrilled because its right up my alley with a fashion meets film theme, and Almodovar is one of my favorite film directors. The spread stars Sonia Rykiel in Women on the Verge, Angela Missoni in Volver and others, including Almodovar himself, all photographed by Jason Schmidt.
The concept of “Designer Double Take” is dressing up model Iris Strubegger as a bunch of famous designers, photographed by Karl Lagerfeld. My favorite is Vivienne Westwood, although of course Donatella and Karl are spot on as well.

This is from the YAZ look book…they don’t credit the photographer for some reason.

I have been charmed by the work of photographer/filmmaker Niall O’Brien. There’s something really honest about his style, like he lets the images speak for themselves.Watch “Superheroes: a study in adolescent desire”:
“Clothes make the man. Naked people have little or no influence on society”. ~Mark Twain
I know I’ve already posted from this spread but I love it so too bad. Ali Stephens and Batman for French Revue de Modes.

“First Spring” is a fashion film by Yang Fudong for Prada. It’s nice to see someone bringing something new to the table…this short is daring, theatrical…and overall just stunning and surreal and meticulous and oh my gosh, every frame is a beautiful photograph from a magazine.
Clearly I’m into it…what are your thoughts?

I would have to say Dazed & Confused is my favorite fashion magazine because they do some really incredible interviews with filmmakers as well as figures in fashion, and they always deliver with the fashion editorials. Also, they aren’t afraid of writing intelligently; a lot of glossies seem to think that its readers are allergic to words and just want to see pretty pictures of expensive clothes.
I just bought the february issue and I love that they featured the crazy Viktor & Rolf mesh creations, (I’d been dying to get a better look at the red gown with the cut out holes) as well as a piece about “emporer of anime” Hayao Miyazaki, who I love.
It also came with a free BE STUPID shirt from the new Diesel campaign…I can’t say I’m a huge fan of Diesel or their marketing technique of having people strive to “Be stupid: Smart may have the brains, but stupid has the balls”. I guess its – er -selling a lifestyle?

First week in London colour story, continued.
BROWN
Brown is for Pret a Manger latte foam…(I dunno what it is about their foam but its amazing)…
…for pub food…
…and for the Prime Lobster.
(“The significance of this caricature is that a lobster was a somewhat contemptuous term for a soldier, and in 1828 the Duke, a soldier, had become Prime Minister”).
